Week 4: Toronto at Sacramento

 

The Argos and Gold Miners took to the field for Week 4 action. An uncharacteristically rainy evening at Hornet Field greeted the two teams, and that would play a factor in this matchup. Roman Anderson opened the scoring for the Gold Miners with a 26 yard field goal, to put them up by three in the first quarter. Lance Chomyc, not to be outdone, scored from a measly 12 yards after Matt Dunigan got them to the red zone with a massive 59 yard pass. Matt Dunigan however would turn the ball over with an interception at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter David Archer would give the ball back to the Argos after fumbling the ball while being sacked. Matt Dunigan would take the field and get the Boatmen to the red zone again, but would have to settle for another Chomyc field goal making the score 6-3 in favour of the Argos. Right after the kick sailed through the uprights. BOOM! Lightning. The refs halted the game and the teams went to the locker room to wait out the storm.

After the storm cleared, the game resumed and Troy Mills was fired up exiting the locker room. The first drive after the storm had him fire off a 61 yard run. A massive contribution to the drive, as Charles Miles took over in the red zone and made no mistake, as he scampered in for a touchdown making it 10-6. The Argos struggles in the red zone continued as the got close in the next drive but had to settle for another chip shot field goal from Chomyc. At the half, Gold Miners had a one point lead.

The third quarter for the Argos echoed what happened in the first half. They couldn't finish drives. Despite that, they actually took the lead with yet another chip shot field goal. 12-10 at the end of the third for the Argos. The fourth started out hot for the Miners as Malcolm Frank picked off a Matt Dunigan pass (Dunigan's fourth of the game after giving up 3 picks in the first quarter). Miners would take the ball and use the hot running game to get them into Toronto territory. The Argo defense would stop them at their forty, forcing Anderson to make a 47 yard field goal attempt. Anderson would be picture perfect and split the uprights to give the Miners a 1 point lead, 13-12.

With 3 minutes to go, The Argos would take the ball at their own 34. Manning the bilge pumps, the Argos began to show their class. Matt Dunigan would find Rocket Ismail for a big 33 yard pass. He would also find Darrell K Smith for 17 yard pass. The running game was a bit of a let down for the Argos as Michael Clemons failed time and again to establish any sort of run, and this drive was no exception to that. However, thanks to a defensive holding penalty on what would have been a stalled drive, the Boatmen were pulling together to try to get a touchdown. Then, with 40 seconds left in the game, The Argos break the Miner's blockade. “Pinball” ran it in for a touchdown! 19-13 with precious little time remaining. The Miners tried, but couldn't connect on any of their final three plays, with Rodney Harding putting an exclamation point on the final play of the game. The Argos wade out of a waterlogged Hornet Field with a 19-13 victory.

The Argos return home for their next match against the Baltimore Stallions. The Gold Miners travel to Commonwealth Stadium to dance with the 1981 version of Double E FC.

Week 4: 1981 Eskimos at 2019 Winnipeg

The battle for first place took place in week 4, as Warren Moon and the 1981 Eskimos came to Investors Group Field to take on the 2019 Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and it turned into a game for the ages!

Both clubs started slowly; feeling each other out like a pair of wary boxers probing for weaknesses. Justin Medlock started things off with a 49-yard field goal for the only points of the opening frame, as Edmonton continued its tradition of slow starts. Neither team could seem to get much going, and this continued into the second quarter, with Edmonton's first drive of that quarter resulting in a rouge for the Green and Gold's opening point.

The teams started coming alive as the first half wound down. First, Matt Nichols efficiently drove the Bomber down the field after punter Hank "The Shank" Ilesic earned his nickname with an 18-yard punt off the side of his foot, and the home team capitalized with a 60-yard drive culminating with a 24-yard catch-and-run by Nic Demski for 6. Medlock's point-after gave the Blue Bombers a 10-1 lead inside the Three Minute Warning, and that got Edmonton back in their groove. Moon connected with his favourite target, Brian Kelly, for passes of 17 and 23 yards, sandwiching a Jim Germany run to take the ball inside the Winnipeg 10 yard line. A 3-yard run and an incomplete pass to Tommy Scott had coach Hugh Campbell gamble on 3rd and Goal from the Bombers' 6 yard line, but a short pass to Brian Kelly took advantage of their coverage and Edmonton brought the game back within 2 heading into the locker room.

The 3rd quarter started off tentatively again with the Eskimos forcing Winnipeg into a 2-and-out, but on Edmonton's second play of the half, receiver Tommy Scott fumbled and DB Winston Rose scooped up the loose ball and rushed for 27 yards before a shoestring tackle by speedy receiver Waddell Smith saved the major score. This just delayed the inevitable however, as Johnny Augustine took the handoff on the ensuing play to run 5 yards into the end zone and re-pad the Blue and Gold's lead, bringing the score to 17-8. Edmonton started clicking and strung together a 97-yard drive, as Scott made good on his earlier gaffe with a 5-yard catch in the end zone. The Bombers decided to go toe-to-toe and used the medium passing game to devastating effect. The teams looked like it could come down to whoever held the ball last, when Lady Luck smiled on the team from the Alberta capital: Medlock kicked off after their last score, and Gary Hayes had the ball jarred loose on the return. Special Teamer Josh Borger picked up the loose ball and ambled 60 yards to the Bomber 32 as the 3rd quarter ended, and the fans in the stands and back home were ready for a fantastic finish.

The first Esks drive of the 4th ended in a Dave Cutler field goal, but the all-star Defense got the ball back in 3 plays and Moon marched his soldiers downfield and hefted a 36-yard bomb to the speedy Waddell Smith, who got to display his trademark "Waddell Waddle" in the end zone as the PAT by Cutler put the visitors on top for the first time this game. Winnipeg was nowhere near finished and two long passes to first Lucky Whitehead and then a pair to Demski bring the Bombers within 2. The 2-point run by Canadian Andrew Harris restored the lead to a converted touchdown, but a spectacular return on the following kickoff saw cornerback Joe Hollimon streak 82 yards down the field, and and the score was knotted at 32 when fullback Neil Lumsden lumbered in from 13 yards for the major.

With 3 minutes left, The Bombers utilised the short pass game with 2 strikes to Kenny Lawler, but backup QB Chris Strelever lost the handle on the QB keeper on 3rd and 1, and the Eskimos capitalized with passes to Kelly and Scott, giving the slotback his first TD of the game. All that was left was for the defense to come up one more time, as they held Winnipeg, who turned the ball over on downs and gave the victory to Edmonton.

This ties the two teams at 3-1. A thrilling game that should be great to watch when they are back for the rematch in week 9 back at Commonwealth Stadium!

Week 3: 2019 Winnipeg at 1991 Toronto

Winnipeg is a team that is good at grinding out games, but three lightning strikes in the first quarter by the special teams and defense put the Bombers up 20-0 early in a game they'd slowly put away. The first strike came from Janarion Grant, as he returned a Hank Ilesic punt 89 yards to open the scoring. The Bombers defense then took over late in the first quarter, as back to back Toronto offensive plays became pick sixes, with Winston Rose stealing an out route for an easy 31 yard return, and then Jeff Hecht intercepting a bomb intended for Rocket Ismail and weaving through a mass of humanity for a 94 yard return.

After a quiet second quarter, which ended when the Bombers blocked an Argos field goal, the Argos came back in the third, mounting a rally that resulted in a 21-14 score early in the fourth quarter. The Bombers did make the Argos work for it, with long drives and short touchdown runs by Pinball Clemons and Kevin Smellie ending the drives, but the feelings of "No lead is safe" didn't last long, as the Bombers chewed up most of the fourth quarter on time consuming drives. A two score lead was re-established after the 3 minute warning with a Justin Medlock field goal, and then Jeff Hecht and Marcus Sayles ended any chance of a Toronto comeback with interceptions.

The Bombers offense wasn't impressive on paper, but it did just enough to keep the team in front. Andrew Harris was limited to 67 yards on the ground and Matt Nichols completed less than 50 percent of his passes. Matt Dunigan threw for 336 yards, but the four interceptions were back breakers.

Winnipeg heads home to face the 1981 Eskimos in a battle for first place, and the Argos get ready to travel to Sacramento to face the Gold Miners.

2020 Week 3: The Battle of Commonwealth, chapter 1

Friday night saw the Battle of Commonwealth take place, as the first meeting between the 1981 Eskimos and 2003 Eskimos was a clash for the ages. The 81 squad continued their slow starting ways as the modern team drove the field en route to a touchdown on their opening drive. A quick two and out got the ball back in Ricky Ray's hands, but he followed Warren Moon's two incompletions with a pair of his own. Not to be outdone, the 81 Pivot mixed things up between a ground attack and an aerial assault, but the 03 defense held strong, and once again the ball exchanged hands. The 03 win turned sour this time, as backup offensive lineman Patrick Kabongo, miraculously parachuted in from the 2004 Esks. This time, however, Ray got on a roll - distributing the ball with precision with a 20-yard strike to slotback Terry Vaughn, while running backs Mike Pringle and Troy Mills found their own groove with a pair of 15-yard rushes. Another toss to Vaughn resulted in the slippery receiver dancing down the field with the end zone in his sites, but for a shoestring tackle by the veteran Larry Highbaugh. This just delayed the inevitable however, as Mills bulled ahead for the 2-yard score on the next play to give the 2003 squad a 14-0 lead with 2 minutes remaining in the opening frame. Returner Joe Hollimon took the following kickoff, eluding several tacklers, aided by superb blocking to the 2003 teams' 48, and this woke the sleeping giant as Moon had his first completion of the night in an outlet pass to Brian Kelly for a medium gain. The 2003 defense held on the next play, but a holding penalty by their defensive line gave Edmonton a fresh set of downs, followed by a 7-yard run to end the first quarter.

The second quarter opened with a 31-yard Field Goal by David Cutler, and the '81 squad was finally on the board, trailing 14-3. 2003 had a few efficient plays to march the ball, but another penalty from the undisciplined squad kept them short of continuing the drive, and they had to settle for a field goal attempt. 03 kicker/punter Sean Fleming was wide right on the attempt however, and returner Gary Hayes elected to bring it out, to start the drive deep in their own territory. The 81's third two-and-out looked to give momentum back to the newer club, but an errant pass by Ray intended for favourite target Terry Vaughn was picked off by veteran DB Ed Jones on his own 27. This time the older squad decided to play the short game and nickle-and-dimed their way down the field, and when their opponents moved up, delivered a 29-yard laser to wide receiver Brian Kelly to bring the ball to the 2003's 26-yard line. This ultimately led to Cutler's second field goal of the night, and the 81s were clawing their way closer. A squibbed kickoff was played by an 03 up-back where Canadian receiver Scott Robinson was shaken up on the play, but he managed to stay in. This was a warning shot by fate however, as on the next play the 03 team was deflated on what looked like a routine Mike Pringle run, when 2nd-year QB phenom Ricky Ray got tangled up with a defender after the exchange and had to be carted off the field. The effect on the younger team was measurable from this point as the older squad made short work of their next series, including a 63-yard bomb to slotback Tommy Scott, stopped just shy of the goal line. Moon ran a pass to veteran Canadian receiver Stu Lang for the club's first touchdown of the night, and with the convert the teams were separated by the slimmest of margins 14-13, which was the score as the half drew to a close.

The defenses were especially fired up coming out of the locker rooms for the 3rd quarter, and both teams traded punts again. Warren Moon tried the short pass game again, but showed his arm strength with a 34-yard pass again to Scott followed by league receiving leader Waddell Smith's first catch of the night, a 40-yard touchdown grab to give the 1981 team their first lead of the evening at 20-14. QB Jason Maas, who had lost his starting job to the rookie Ray the year before, wanted to show that he was no second-stringer in talent with a 48-yard toss to speedster Ed Hervey, but the 81 defense welcomed him back to the playing field as DB and return man Gary Hayes picked him off on a crossing route in the Red zone to snuff out the drive. Moon again mixed short and long passes with ground gains by Germany and Angelo Santucci before Cutler's 3rd Field Goal of the night, and again the 81 secondary forced the more modern squad to give up the ball on yet another 2-and-out as 3/4 time drew to a close.

1981's ball control offense starting wearing down the clock in the final frame, with a 4 minute drive ending in another Cutler 3-pointer, and their defense again stymied an 03 drive to get the ball back for their offense. a nearly-5 minute drive again lead by Moon resulted in the 5th and final field goal in Dave Cutler's night to lead 29-14 and many fans started heading for the exit just before the 3-minute warning. If the fans had given up, the 2003 team hadn't though, and the long ball was Maas' friend again as they worked against their biggest enemy - the score clock - and an efficient drive marched 70 yards down field, culminating in a short, 3-yard pass to Jason Tucker to bring the game to within a single score. Needing a major and a 2-point convert to tie the game, the 03s attempted an onside kick, which Fleming executed to perfection, as the teams clashed in a morass of bodies as the final minute flag was raised. a 16 yard strike to Jason Tucker started to put doubt into the minds of the '81 supporters, but two straight incompletions brought the balance of the game down to a Hail Mary, which was knocked away at the last second by Ed Jones to end the threat as the clock read 00. Fans of the CFL everywhere are hoping that Ricky Ray's injury isn't as serious as it first appeared, but if it is, the 2003 squad at least showed that their backup may be as good as many other teams' starter and they still will remain a dangerous opponent as the season rolls on. We can't wait to see these two teams go at each other in week 7, when they have their rematch.

Next up for the 2003 team is Baltimore as they head to Memorial Stadium to try and catch the Stallions after their short turnaround, while the 2-1 1981 squad travels to IG Field to take on Andrew Harris and the undefeated Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a clash for 1st place!

2020 Week 2: 1995 Baltimore at 2019 Winnipeg

As was the case in quite a few of their games last year, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers had a game that was a tale of two halves. The first half was a walkover on a stunned Stallions club, who lost Tracy Ham on their first offensive snap and could not find a way to get moving under backup Shawn Jones. The Bombers had no trouble moving, putting up a touchdown before Baltimore even touched the ball. Darvin Adams and Kenny Lawler had big gains on Matt Nichols passes, and Andrew Harris put the ball into the end zone from five yards out for the early advantage. After a Baltimore 2 and out, the Bombers put up three more as Justin Medlock connected from 35 yards out. Baltimore finally obtained a first down, but the rest of the quarter saw the teams trade punts.

Andrew Harris started the second quarter off with a bang, going 63 yards on a carry to put the Bombers in scoring range again, and he would put the finishing touches on the drive from 2 yards out, and all of a sudden, the Bombers were up 17. Another 2 and out from Baltimore gave the Bombers the ball back, and they ground down the Stallions defense again with Harris scoring from 5 yards out after carries of 14 and 20 on the drive, and it looked to all the world like a blowout was in progress.

Late in the quarter, a pass interference penalty gave Baltimore a bit of life, and Carlos Huerta hit a 25 yard field goal at the end of the half to get the Stallions on the scoreboard. That would be the beginning of Winnipeg mistakes, but not the end by any means. On the opening drive of the second half, driving for another potential score, Matt Nichols was picked off by Chris Johnson to end the threat, and the Stallions would pick up a single point on their drive, with Carlos Huerta missing a field goal. Winnipeg then ate some clock but ran out of gas just out of field goal range, and the teams would trade punts to end the third quarter.

With 11 minutes to play, the 20 point Winnipeg lead was starting to look safe, but a botched snap deep in Winnipeg territory was scooped up by Tracy Gravely, and Baltimore pounded the rock in for their first major of the day. They would not make the two point conversion, but all of a sudden, the Stallions were back in it at 24-10.

No matter, the Bombers were driving again looking for a putaway score when Andrew Harris fumbled on the Baltimore side of midfield, killing another potential scoring drive for the Bombers. After a few punts back and forth, Winnipeg had to punt it back, but a bobbled snap had Justin Medlock rushing a kick, and the ball went out of bounds on the Winnipeg side of midfield with 3:40 to go. Shawn Jones finally got into rhythm, hitting Reggie Perry and Shannon Culver for big gains before Mike Pringle scored from 5 yards out to bring Baltimore within a touchdown. Winnipeg was able to eat all but 10 seconds off the game clock, but Justin Medlock missed from 49, and the ensuing return out of the end zone gave Baltimore one last chance from their 34. Shawn Jones looked to pass, was flushed out of the pocket, and flipped the ball back to Mike Pringle, who had been attempting to block on the play. Pringle reversed field and had open space in front of him, but was finally cornered at the Winnipeg 25. He lateraled back to Chris Armstrong, but Armstrong was tripped up as he tried to cut back across the field, and the game ended.

Winnipeg now travels to 1-1 Toronto and the surprisingly 0-2 Stallions stay home to host the Gold Miners.

2020 Week 2: '91 Toronto Argonauts @ '81 Edmonton Eskimos

The '91 Toronto Argonauts, still reeling from their opening week loss to the '03 Edmonton Eskimos, had to stay in the self-proclaimed “City of Champions” for week 2. They had a much bigger task in taking on one of the greatest teams to ever grace a Canadian field in the 1981 Edmonton Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium. A rarity occurred during the game as Hank Ilesic, the punter for both the '91 Argos, and the '81 Eskies, had to use a golf cart around the track to get to both benches during the course of the game, as well as having to change on either sideline.

The first quarter was really a defensive showcase. Both secondaries were on point in preventing Warren Moon and Matt Dunigan showing their class in the early going. The command centre was also on full display as they took a big gain away from the Scullers within 3 minutes of the kickoff. At the 6 minute mark, Lance Chomyc attempted a 46 yard field goal that hit the upright. Within the final minute, Chomyc would be redeemed by connecting with 45 yard field goal to give the Boatmen a 3-0 lead to end the first.

The second quarter opened things up a little more. Warren Moon settled in as he connected with Waddell Smith at the 11 minute mark for a huge 60 yard strike to give the Eskies a 7-3 lead. The Argos went 2 and out, but when Edmonton took possession, on the third play of their drive, Don Berry intercepted a pass around the midfield area. Matt Dunigan took advantage and found Darrell K. Smith in the endzone with 5 minutes to go in the half to give the Argos a 10-7 lead. Lance Chomyc would kick a 30 yard field goal, and would have one more from 56 yards dong the upright before the half was done. Argos go into the locker room with a 13-7 lead.

Hugh Campbell rallied the troops during halftime, and it was evident. As the Argos opened the half, the offence sputtered. Larry Highbaugh would intercept a Matt Dunigan pass to give the Eskimos possession 2 minutes into the 3^rd quarter. Warren Moon connected with Waddell Smith again with a 34 yard catch to get his second touchdown of the game, and to put the Double-E in front by 1, 14-13. Moon would find Smith again 2 minutes later with a massive 65 yard throw for his third Touchdown of the game. That put them up 21-13. Adam Rita looked dismayed with the performance of his offence after 3 consecutive 2 and outs. Dave Cutler put a 43 yard field goal away to make it 24-13 with 7:20 remaining. With 3 minutes to go in the quarter, both teams stalemating with 2 and outs, Warren Moon tried to find Waddell Smith again, this time, he found Ed Berry. His second interception of the game went 61 yards the other way before being stopped at the Edmonton 8 yard line. Matt Dunigan was nice and cool in the red zone as he found Paul Masotti for the touchdown. The score 24-20 in favour of the Esks as the 4^th quarter began.

Edmonton started the 4^th with the ball, 2 minutes in, Dave Cutler would attempt a field goal, however a bad snap forced Cutler to make a messy punt instead. Toronto would take possession at their own 18 yard line. Matt Dunigan would find Jeff Boyd with a huge 46 yard throw for a first down. Kevin Smellie would run it inside for a first as well. Dunigan would make Darrell K. Smith his favourite target in the drive connecting with him twice for good gains. The Boatmen pulling together made it to the Edmonton 18. Dunigan would find DK Smith for the Touchdown capping off a 7 play 92 yard drive. Argos take the lead 27-24 with 9:20 to go.

With 2 minutes to go, Edmonton took possession at their own 46. With a field goal separating the two, they just had to get within Cutler's range to send it to OT. Warren Moon targeted Tommy Scott for a first down at the Toronto 51. With 1:20 to go, Warren Moon dropped back to pass, but Dennis Meyer, the Argos Defensive Coordinator, sent the corners on a blitz, and Reggie Pleasant found a hole in the line. He got to Moon for a massive 13 yard sack! All or nothing for the next play, 3^rd and 23. Moon connected with Marco Cyncar, but only got 9 yards, and turned it over on downs. Victory formation, and the '91 Argos claw back to defeat the '81 Eskimos 27-24.

Waddell Smith torched the Argos secondary with 6 catches, 214 yards and 3 touchdowns. Warren Moon ended the day going 13 for 26, 301 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was picked off 3 times during the game. On the opposite side, Jeff Boyd had a great day as well, 5 catches, 121 yards. Darrell K Smith had 2 touchdowns on his name, with 5 catches for 61 yards. Matt Dunigan went 17 for 27, 309 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Next week, the '81 Eskimos will have to figure out which locker room to go to as the 2003 Eskimos will be the hosts for the first McCauley Bowl of the season. The '91 Argos on the other hand, return to YYZ and head to Skydome for their Home Opener against the 2019 Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

2020 Week 2: 03 Edmonton Eskimos vs. 94 Sacramento Goldminers

After a heartbreaking double OT loss in week one, the Goldminers were back on home field to face the 1-0 '03 Eskimos. The home town fans were ready for a bounce back and hoping to avoid the 0-2 start before hitting the road. What actually happened was one of the craziest games this reporter has witnessed.

The Eskimos started early with a spectacular catch from Ed Hervey and resulted in a Sean Fleming FG on the first drive. The next series spelled more disaster for the home team as they went two and out and the punt was grabbed by Winston October for the 43 yard punt return touchdown. The home team was down 13-0 before 5 minutes had even expired and the fans reacted as this could get ugly. The defenses then took over for most of the first half. After 2 more Fleming field goals, the Miners finally got on the board with 2 minutes left in the half with Anderson getting his first field goal of the game. The Goldminers were lucky to only be down 19-3 going into the half. Edmonton could not get out of their own way with 9 penalties to Sacremento's 2 calls. Many of those calls happening on the miners side of centre and leading to the Fleming field goals. 

The second half became the Troy Mills show for Sacramento. He started the half with a 25 yard romp and was all over the field from there The Sac defense turned the pressure up on Ricky Ray that had one of his worst halves throwing for 3 INTs. Sacramento made him pay for the first one as Mills scored the first touchdown for the home side eight minutes into the 3rd quarter. The lead was all of a sudden only 6 at 19-13. Ray bounced back with a massive 51 yard pass to Jason tucker for the TD on the next series and regained the 13 point lead for the Green and Gold. 

The next three series all featured turnovers. Rahim Abdullah recovered a Mills fumble, followed by Malcolm Frank grabbing a Ray pass for an interception, and then Mills fumbled again and AJ Gass recovered. It was like neither team wanted the ball! Mills settled down for the next series with four runs for 23 yards and then added a 10 yard reverse for the major score. You could feel the momentum switch to the home team. The teams traded punts but Sacramento was getting closer in the field position department each series. Edmonton could not get out of their own side of half, and then the unthinkable happened; Ricky Ray fumbled the ball on the Esks 32 and H. Brown recovered for the Miners. A beautiful 19 yard pass to Rod Harris, followed by a 9 yard grab by Pruitt put the Goldminers on the 1 yard line with 40 seconds left. David Archer leaned in for the touchdown plunge. Anderson hit the convert and the fans erupted as the Miners took the 1 point lead! Then the craziest part of this Cold Snap Football League happened. In the midst of celebration on the sidelines, Anderson kicked off to Mike Bradley and he found a seam for an 84 yard kickoff return touchdown and only 20 seconds left on the clock. Archer had two Hail Mary opportunities and came up short sending the fans home with a second heart wrenching loss. For the plays they did put together, the Esks were lucky to come out on top in this one. The rematch will be in week 7 and could show the same kind of fiery results. The Miners now head out on the road to meet the Baltimore Stallions and the 03 Esks, go back to Commonwelath to face the 81 Esks in a battle of green and gold legends.

2020 Week 1: 2003 Eskimos 34 - 1991 Argos 18

Commonwealth Stadium was buzzing as the first game for the 03 Esks brought the 91 Argos to town. With the deep talent on both teams there were high expectations for an exciting game, and the teams did not disappoint.

It was a defensive battle through most of the first quarter with the Esks holding the ball for 10:20 but down 3-0. Matt Dunnigan had a 40 yard bomb to Boyd and a 38 yard run to try and set the tone early. For the busts in defense, both teams found ways to "bend and not break". The Argo field goal came after a brilliant interception from Reggie Pleasant had them in the Esks red zone, and that was the closest either team got.

The second quarter started with a bang as Darryl Crutchfield intercepted Dunnigan on the Toronto side of half and a massive hole broke open for Troy Mills on the next series to rumble 31 yards for the TD. The next series saw the Double Blue get close but Chomyc missed the FG and they were left with a single point, and still 3 points behind. Fleming added a FG for the Esks with 3:40 to go in the second. Just enough time for Dunnigan and the Boatmen. In two and a half minutes, Dunnigan marched them down the field and capped it off with a 41 yard bomb to Rocket Ismail for the TD, putting the Argos up 11-10. The green and gold got a massive return from Mike Bradley and Fleming was able to ad another FG for the home team to go into the lockeroom up 13-11. The highlights were only about to begin.

The second half saw both teams start with blunders; Dunnigan a hurried bad throw and a bad Esks snap to Ray had back to back 2 and out drives. The next drive had Dunnigan showing the leadership we expect with a 59 yard drive, including a 30 yard pass to Dk Smith and capped off with a vintage Pinball Clemons 39 yard run for the major and an 18-13 lead. On the very next play, Pinball went down with an shoulder injury that would see him leave the game and not return. Mike Bradley with his second 30 yard return had the Esks starting on the Argo 53 and Pringle starting to warm up. The Esks marched to the goalline only to have an unbelievable time count penalty and then get stopped on third and goal from the Toronto 6 yard line for a turnover on downs. The Green and Gold faithful drew quiet and started to show signs that this just wasn't their day. 

The next series everything changed. Ignited by a Donny Brady interception at the Argo 41, Ricky ay decided it was time to put on a show. In three plays to Tucker, Vaughn and back to Tucker, the Eskimos found the endzone and reclaimed the lead. After an Argo two and out, including a Dunnigan intentional grounding call, the Esks took over on their own 38 and the air show continued. 5 plays later, Ed Hervey stretched for the endzone grab but Pringle was flagged for a personal foul and the TD came off the board. No matter to Ray who went back to his favorite target this game and threw his patented end zone throw to Jason Tucker for his second major of the game. There was no taking the pedal off the gas yet as the defense halted the Argos in another two and out and Ray found Terry Vaughn for another TD. 

The Boatmen weren't about to give up and ran the next five minutes driving 60 yards down the field to the Esks 19 yard line. DK Smith caught a touchdown but once again, ref Al Bradbury pulled a major off the board with a procedure penalty on OL Prunster. The next play was the dagger as Quincy Coleman intercepted a throw to DK Smith in the endzone. Coach Higgins said after the game, "The connection between Ricky Ray and Jason Tucker is amazing to watch. Those guys took over when the time came and closed this out for us." The Green and Gold faithful go home happy hoping that they see even more of that fourth quarter team in the coming weeks. Next up for the 03Esks is travelling to Hornet Stadium to play the Sacremento Goldminers. The Argos will stay in Edmonton to match up against the 81Esks.

Overreactions to CSDCFL week 1, pointspreads for week 2

 

They say you should never take too much away from week 1 result in any football league – never mind a league stacked with great Canadian Football League teams like the CSDCFL – but as it says here, what’s the point of posting online if you can’t overreact once in a while?

Starting to wonder about the imperviousness of the Baltimore Stallions, for example, and ready to start talking some Sacramento Gold Miners football; could these guys contend? (Based on an overtime loss? Come on, Os, you’re talking pure h

One question: Why only two playoff teams? No. 3 and quite possibly no. 4 in this league look to be some quality and competitive teams. Besides, just imagine an Eskimos-Eskimos game for all the marbles. Yeesh, right?

1991 Toronto Argonauts +5½ at 1981 Edmonton Eskimos, over/under 45½ points.

After a disappointing 34-18 loss to the 2003 Edmonton Eskimos, head coach Adam Rita made the decision to stay put in time but not space, allowing his Argonauts all the advantages of the 21st century -- but gambling that timelag won't affect his team too seriosuly. But it may not matter: With the opening-day win over the  Baltimore Stallions, the '81 Eskimos have established themselves as the team to beat in the Dream League...

1995 Baltimore Stallions -1 at 2019 Winnipeg Blue Bombers, over/under 56½ points.

If the DSCFL had power rankings, the Stallions would have taken the biggest tumble after a 34-28 loss to the 1981 Eskimos that wasn’t as close as the score indicates – but this observer can’t help wonder if the Bombers’ neo-platoon system at quarterback is enough to keep pace with the Stallions, assuming that Andrew Harris isn’t necessarily good for over 8.0 yards per carry. Baltimore played from behind in their entire week 1, and the Bombers needed 13 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime against the Gold Miners – we’ll be looking to see whether either can hold a lead in this game.

2003 Edmonton Eskimos -4½ at 1994 Sacramento Gold Miners, over/under 56½ points.

Call these two sides the positive surprises of week 1. The late-entry ’03 Eskimos ran up an impressive 34 against the Argos, while the Miners scored 23 points in the game’s first 50 minutes against the Bombers, one of the DSCFL’s better defenses. In a 10-game season, an 0-2 hole is major, so figure Sacramento to play even craftier ball than last week – but they’ll have to avoid the fourth-quarter collapse against an ’03 Esks side, at nearly 32 points per game, that seems to score on every possession. And how topsy-turvy could Sacramento make things on the standings board already with a win…?

2020 Week 1: Edmonton 36 @ Baltimore 28

The 2020 Dream Season kicked off with blockbuster start to the year as two titans clashed south of the border at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. While both teams exhibited some sloppy play on both sides of the ball, the offenses and defenses of the two juggernauts were on full display in a rain-delayed game that had the fans scurrying for cover.

The defenses tested each other out for the first 25 minutes, as the 1981 Eskimos were limited to two Dave Cutler field goals to give Edmonton a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. Edmonton quarterback Warren Moon was sacked hard twice in the last five minutes of the opening frame by the Stallions' All Star defensive tackle Jearld Baylis and linebacker Tracy Gravely, and to add injury to insult, Esks' fullback Neil Lumsden was knocked out of the game with a lower body injury, and did not return. Moon finally got on track on the final drive of the quarter, spreading the ball around to march 70 yards to the Baltimore 21 where Cutler hit his second 3-pointer of the day.

Edmonton's defense proved they were no pushovers either, holding Stallions All Star running back Mike Pringle to runs of -1 and 2 yards to force an early Turnover on Downs to kick off the second quarter, before the teams traded two-and-outs. Edmonton settled for a 3rd Field Goal, and the score stood Dave Cutler 9, Baltimore 0 after the Green and Gold kicker's 51-yard attempt was good. That score seemed to ignite the sluggish Baltimore offense as the Stallions marched methodically down the field, spreading the ball out between passes to receivers Chris Armstrong and Robert Clark before Pringle got on track with 4 consecutive runs to cap the drive with a 1-yard plunge to put Baltimore's first points on the board. Coach Don Matthews showed he doesn't care if it was the first game or the championship game, going for a 2-point convert to bring Edmonton's lead to a single point. Moon, no slouch himself in aerial displays, treated the fans to an aerial display of his own, spreading the ball out between receivers Tommy Scott, Waddell Smith, and Brian Kelly to match the major score, and Cutler's successful convert brought the Green and Gold lead up to to 16-8 with 30 seconds left in the opening half. Edmonton's defense reminded Tracy Ham to keep his head on a swivel as defensive end James "Quick" Parker blew past Baltimore tackle Shar Pourdanesh to sack the Stallions pivot to end the half.

After a lengthy rain delay, Joe Hollimon's 82-yard kick return opened the second half, but the home town defense stiffened and kept Edmonton to another 3-pointer, but on the first Baltimore play of the half, Ham hit rookie receiver Mike Cook with a 75-yard catch-and-run before the fans had all gotten back to their seats with their hot dogs and beer. Moon resumed his air show, with 49- and 29-yard strikes to Waddell Smith, before running back Jim Germany mopped up on a 1-yard plunge to maintain their lead. The 3rd quarter was full of offensive gaffes as well, as the ball seemed to be greased up like a pig at a county fair. First, kicker Carlos Huerta missed a 47-yard field goal, then Stallions' cornerback Irvin Smith intercepted a sure touchdown pass from Moon to Scott. Esks' own corner Larry Highbaugh returned the favour 4 plays later, picking off Ham, as Edmonton headed back toward the goal line, when again the Baltimore front 7 stiffened and forced another turnover on downs on their 7 yard line. A two-and-out from the hometown squad looked like they might concede a 2-point safety, when a mishandled snap by punter Josh Miller had the teams all scrambling for the loose ball, before All-Canadian Defensive Tackle Dave "Dr. Death" Fennell corralled the loose ball to score another touchdown in the final minute of the quarter to padd the visitor's lead 33-15.

After yet another weather delay, Baltimore convinced their fans that this team was made of stern stuff in the final frame as a pair of major scores, aided by a fumble recovery on a kickoff by linebacker O.J. Brigance brought the team within 5 halfway through the fourth quarter. Moon hit with a pair of strikes to Kelly and Smith to bring the Esks within Cutler range, and the score read 36-28, but hanging heavier on their mind was an injury to Defensive lineman Baylis, and Baltimore seemed to run out of gas after their defensive captain was forced out of the game. Without Baylis' strong presence up front, Edmonton managed to control the ball - and the clock - the last 2 minutes of the game, to hold on and seal the victory.

If this is what these teams look like in week 1, we can't wait to see them knock heads again in week 6, when Baltimore heads north to Edmonton to try and disappoint the fans of the Green and Gold. Next up for the Edmonton squad are Rocket Ismail and Pinball Clemons as they host the 1991 Toronto Argonauts, while Baltimore travels to IG Field to take on the 2019 Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

2020 Week 1: Winnipeg 32 @ Sacramento 26 (OT)

It took a 10 point fourth quarter comeback and overtime, but the 2019 Grey Cup champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers came through on the road in their first foray into the Dream League. Andrew Harris and Chris Streveler ran a run based offense for chunks of the second half and overwhelmed the Gold Miners' run defense, with the Bombers going for 203 yards on the ground as a team.

The big reason they fell behind in the first place, though, was the David Archer to Rod Harris connection. Harris had 10 catches for 222 yards, including two controversial sideline catches that were called incomplete by the field officials but were overturned by the replay booth. One set up a 9 yard Roman Anderson field goal on the final play of the first half to put Sacramento up for the first time in the game, 13-10.

The game got off to a chaotic start, with Matt Nichols being intercepted by Jason Wallace in Sacramento territory on the first drive of the game. This was followed by Marcus Sayles blocking a 47 yard field goal attempt to keep the Miners off the board. Turnovers then became much harder to come by, as the offenses were able to move the ball up and down the field for the most part. Andrew Harris ran for a 44 yard touchdown to open the scoring, and then the teams traded field goals. The offenses would stall out and trade punts twice before Sacramento put up a 94 yard drive to tie the game, with Tony Hargain scoring on a 7 yard pass from David Archer. A few more punts as time wound down in the half led to the Harris catch and Anderson's go-ahead field goal.

Sacramento took the second half kickoff and proceeded to roll down the field on an 85 yard drive which led to a 10 point lead when David Archer snuck the ball in from the 1. The Bombers would follow with a 79 yard drive of their own which died at the Sacramento 2. It was the first appearance of the Streveler package, as he took over early in the drive on a second and three and completed a play action pass for a first down, and then almost closed the gap in the score, but Harris was stopped one yard short on third and three from the four. The field position would still grant the Bombers 3 on the next drive, as they took over in Sacramento territory following a punt. The Miners almost extended their lead to two touchdowns, but faltered at the Winnipeg 15 and settled for 3. With 11 minutes remaining, the defending Grey Cup champions were staring defeat in the face.

Matt Nichols then came up big, hitting Darvin Adams for 37 yards to flip field position, and the Streveler package took over on 3rd and 2 from the Sacramento 17. Deciding that 6 was imperative here, the Bombers went for it and Harris took off through the mass of humanity for 11 yards and a first down, and Streveler did the rest, with a 6 yard bootleg to narrow the gap to 3. Sacramento gained a first down on the next drive, put penalties and a Jackson Jeffcoat sack put them in 3rd and 29, and Winnipeg took over at their 38 with 2:40 to play. They'd milk the clock down, as they got into field goal range early, and went very conservative late, relying on Justin Medlock to tie it, and he did with 10 seconds to go from 47 yards out.

The teams traded field goals on their first possessions in overtime, neither achieving a first down. Winnipeg then went up 6 with Andrew Harris scoring his second touchdown of the game from 35 yards out, but the convert failed, as Harris was swarmed over at the line. It didn't matter, though, as Sacramento committed a personal foul on a 3rd and 1 play that put a first down out of reach on the next play, and the Bombers escaped with a win.

The Bombers are now 1-0 and host the 1995 Baltimore Stallions next week, while Sacramento hosts the 2003 Edmonton Eskimos.
